When it comes to selecting an outdoor TV antenna there are many things to consider. First, determine the distance and direction from the TV station transmitters to your home. Second, be aware of the terrain between your home and the broadcast tower, the transmitter's power, and the height of its tower. With many variables to consider, there really isn't a one size fits all TV antenna, though we do have a couple which come close to that.

A critical aspect to an antenna is the frequency in which it can receive. Digital TV signals can be broadcast over two frequency ranges, VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). VHF channels range from 2 - 13, where "low-band" VHF channels range from 2 - 6 and "high-band" VHF are channels 7 - 13. The UHF channel range is 14 - 69, close to 3/4 of all digital television stations broadcast in UHF. Most viewers should be fine using a UHF outdoor TV antenna. Below is a quick breakdown of the number of post digital transition full-power TV stations broadcasting in High/Low-band VHF and UHF frequency.

• Low-band VHF (ch. 2-6): 40
• High-band VHF (ch. 7-13): 445
• UHF (ch. 14-51): 1334

For our area here on the west coast of Florida, including Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice, FL, some of our major network affiliates are in the VHF Band, so it will be important in considering antenna choices.

While direction from broadcasters is important, distance is another important consideration when selecting an antenna. For nearby broadcasters we have metropolitan and suburban styles of digital antennas. As distance increases from local broadcast towers, we generally want a larger style of antenna with more elements. These are the fringe and deep fringe type.
